Minutes: Webster Lake Association Meeting
At Indian Ranch on October 11th, 2005

  • President's Report
    • An update on storm water project - bids out and construction of phase I will begin in late spring with Memorial Beach and Snug Harbor as major sites for cleanup. There is $30,000 left and we are investigating how this will be allocated. Next grant ($168,000) is already in and we are seriously seeking a WLA member to serve on the Storm Water committee. Please contact Dick if you are interested. The priorities are based on a study done by the town in 1998.
    • There is a Town Meeting Oct. 17th at Town Hall 7 pm. Please go to Town Meeting and be heard regarding two very important articles; one on increasing the littering fines from a current $20 to $500 and we support this. The town of Dudley has already done this to help with the French River cleanup. The current fee is absurd as it is cheaper to pay a fine then it is to legally dump your trash.
    • The second article concerns the Watershed Protection area around the lake and this could impact us all greatly if passed as it aids development in a way that adversely affects the lake. Dick has sent out Article 26 in a WLA email - be sure to read it. Hope to see many of you there.
    • The French River group will be having a cleanup if you would like to join in on Sat. 10/15 8 am - meet at Luminex. Allan and Ken have been extremely supportive of our association. We appreciate all the support and wish to assist you as we are all connected.
    • The French River group will also host a night at Bartlett High School Wed.10/26 @ 7 pm to discuss ideas for students from UCONN who will be doing 200 hours of research on the French River/Webster area. Please come and brainstorm ideas.
    • Jane or Dick will send out information regarding all of the above to members
  • Vice President's Report
    • Newsletter items are due to Jane as soon as possible. North Pond BOD is to submit items as well
    • Order for Lands End jackets will go in tomorrow so does not delay if you have not already ordered.
    • Halloween plans are final to be at Point Breeze with a private party in the Pinnacle room for WLA first and then to join in the rest of the evening's festivities. Get your costumes ready.
  • Secretary's Report
    • Membership is 502 - don't forget to spread the word and a membership is a nice holiday gift idea (along with a calendar)
    • The secretary's report from the last general meeting was approved.
  • Treasurer's Report
    • Jane read report prepared by Joan Wentland who was out of town. We have a balance of $32,000. The report was approved by the membership.
  • Environmental Committee Report
    • Ernie reported on the Water Quality team and thanked everyone who worked over the year.
    • We are investigating another lake survey to examine the infestation of pondweed that we have identified this fall. Geosyntec and Act will be contacted
    • We request that more people get involved in the Environmental Committee - this is an exciting opportunity to be an active participant in keeping our lake pristine. Contact Paul LaFramboise if you would like to be involved.
  • FUN-draisers Committee Report
    • Great work Carolyn Gunther and your calendar committee! The calendars are wonderful and on sale now for $10.00. Great holiday gifts and everyone on the lake should have at least one (another at work too?) Thanks to everyone who helped solicit business ads and especially to all the business contributors themselves. We appreciate your support - you should be getting your complimentary calendars soon.
    • The golf tournament could use your help as we will hold the first WLA tournament next spring (late) instead of the Treasure Trunk this year. Whether you golf or not, Anita Pichette and Janice Anderson could use your ideas.
  • Old Business
    • Killdeer Island president, Peter Luchina, gave us the results of the race and donated $250 to the WLA. Thank you Killdeer Island Club and congratulations to our own Judy Keegan who won the walk division in outstanding fashion.
  • New Business
    • The town's Zoning By Laws need to be approved, as they are currently only a draft. We might be able to get this on the town meeting floor as well. They need to be made permanent and then changes can be made if needed.
    • Chris and Tom Robert and Michelle are to be thanked for holding our meeting at Indian Ranch. They had planned a tour but the weather did not cooperate so would like to host another meeting in the future. The munchies were delightful so thank you again
  • Announcements
    • Next BOD meeting is Oct. 25th at the Colonial 7 pm
    • Next general WLA meeting is Dec. 13th at Point Breeze
    • Enjoy the foliage and have a happy Halloween.

Regards, Linda
