  • President's Report
    • Cranston Print, WLA and the town are coordinating a drop in the lake levels for mid to late October. The amount is being determined based on the current lake level (approximate total drop will be @ 2 feet). This will enable lake residents to do wall and beach work (also a good time to rake out dead weeds and growth on dry land). The amount of water/inflow from the tributaries is small so calculating the lake returning to its present level is tricky. It could conceivably take months depending upon the weather. An email will be sent out as to the exact dates in early fall. It is suggested that if you need work done, schedule it for late October.
  • Vice President's Report
    • Jane Hill brought up the proposed lake label set up fee with Lands End that will be used to order a myriad of clothing and supplies in the future. The set up fee is a one time $265 and then used with orders of six items or more from WLA members. We will offer different items for members – jacket orders are now being placed so you can contact Jane if interested. There will be an $11 charge per item for the lake name and WLA logo on items ordered . Motioned by Arlen Johnson and seconded by Paula Chauvin; passed to spend funds to set up with Land’s End. Other members may take the logo and order from other suppliers as well. Any ideas?
  • Secretary's Report
    • Current membership is 411 ( 73 North, 114 South, 189 Middle and 35 off lake) While this is impressive, we have over 800 lake residents and need to do more to encourage membership.
    • The Adopt a Street campaign is designed to have members canvas street areas to notify non-members of what we have done and will try to do. It was suggested that a brochure be created to have available for this purpose and BOD will bring it up at the next meeting. Members present were asked to sign up for a street, take applications and talk to prospective members. We need to all do more in this area to keep out WLA strong.
    • The only way we can increase membership is with your help so please help us all out here. The new application also has a junior category for those under 18 for $10 as well.
    • Jane will also revisit the realtor contacts to encourage people new to the lake to get involved. Members may give info and applications to business owners they know.
    • It was also suggested to contact Cable (channel 11) to see if we can use this as a resource as well.
    • Last months minutes were approved (correction on email address for LindaLittle@comcast.net
    • Members need to update any email changes with Jane and Linda
  • Treasurer's Report
    • Income $ 16,790.07
    • Expenses $ 26,761.50
    • Balance $26,884.06
  • Environmental Committee Report
    • Paul LaFramboise reported that the milfoil treatment was very successful. There are some areas that are reporting regrowth and he will visit sites this week. Most of this is from fragmentation from the milfoil settling. Some areas of the lake such as the marina cove are clear. This is an ongoing plan of attack as milfoil cannot be eradicated, just controlled. We will need to continue to treat hot spots.
    • Sucker Brook channel cleared well with the harvester, which is now 3-6’ deep and passable by boat. The more traffic there the better so go and check it out. We appreciate Dennis Westgate’s help with this cleanup.
    • Water Quality Testing teams are receiving additional equipment and the teams are testing every week. It will take time to compile information on the lake, a long term project that will pay off with essential information.
    • Milfoil will return to certain areas of the lake due to wind and water currents which is why we need to continue this program
    • Some areas of the lake were left out because of the primary identification by GeoSyntec and Act and will need to be treated in the future.
    • Sucker Brook was a priority for passage of boats with the need to eliminate floating islands below the surface.
    • Sandy Shore residents (Killdeer) want to get together to find out what is best for their weed problem
    • If you have questions about when to do raking please contact Paul or the environmental committee for the best ideas before you act
    • Lily pads can be cut down as best you can
    • Pondweed seems to be a concern and the Environmental Committee will ask ACT what is best
    • Letters will go out to the 260 abutters of the milfoil cleanup asking for donations and membership.
  • FUN-draisers Committee Report
    • Judy informed us that the next social committee meeting will be 9/7 at Nancy Healy’s house. If you wish to join the committee, contact Judy and she will give you more information.
    • The barbecue was a huge success, made a profit of over $500. If you have suggestions for next year, let Judy know.
    • The 2005 calendar is progressing well with a small amount of business card ads and a few half pages left to sell. All proceeds go towards weed treatment
    • Possible events for the next year are a bus trip to Freeport shopping, a comedy night, scavenger hunt, Boston show trip, mystery night and open house tour. Any ideas? Contact Judy Morrison
  • Old Business
    • Docks? – the town has not acted on this matter to we have no news
  • New Business
    • We are investigating license plate covers with the name of the lake and anyone who knows a manufacturer of these items should email the WLA
    • It was questioned as to the membership from the condo associations and they have been very involved in new memberships
    • Officer Bates will be holding a meeting on how to handle island emergencies on Aug 22 at 4 pm on Long Island. If you are an island dweller, this would be very informative.
    • Killdeer Island is hosting a road race again on Sept. 11 at 10 am. You may run or walk and proceeds go to the Killdeer Island Assoc. and the Webster-Dudley Boys/Girls Clubs. Contact Peter Luchina for more information. There will also be a block party on Killdeer that same day at 2 pm and all should bring a dish (pot luck) WLA members are welcome as well.
