March 31st, 2004
Welcome to the first
monthly edition of the Webster Lake Association News. My name is
Linda Littleton, a BOD member of the WLA who believes our
organization to be a most welcome addition to our community. I
have spent every summer of my life on the great pond and am a
"Hyland" by trade. Many of you may have known my late Dad, LeRoy,
a Webster native, who was very active in town, lived on the lake
and loved every minute of it. My entire family resides in Webster
on the lake except for me (I reside out of town in the winter and
summer here but will be a full time lake resident in the near
future.) I have offered to write to write this column for your
information. Let’s begin with purpose "The Webster Lake
Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing,
preserving and protecting the quality of the lake and its
watershed through the promotion of responsible, effective,
environmental and educational policies. We shall strive to
strengthen and unite the Webster Lake community through
recreational, social and civic activities. Our mission is to
preserve this regionally unique resource as a pristine legacy for
future generations." I will be bringing readers news worthy items
about happenings of the association, important dates to remember,
educational news and environmental updates. As many of you know,
the Webster Lake Association was started by our own Jane Hill with
the intent of bringing people together who either live on the
Great Pond and who care about the future of the lake for the
betterment of our community of Webster. We have 381 members who
are now involved in this quest. We have a dedicated Board of
Directors, lead by president Dick Cazeault, a Social Committee,
Environmental Committee, representatives from all three ponds of
the lake, and numerous sub committees that are all working
diligently throughout the year. Over the winter, we completed an
Aquatic Weed Survey by Geosyntech corporation, had 12 members
attend the COLAP (Council of Lakes and Ponds) conference, our own
Tom Pezzella (marine biology teacher) trained four water quality
analysis testing teams (one for each pond and an additional one to
do the streams) are working on proposals from two weed control
companies for potential weed work, are meeting with the town to
encourage Phase II of the storm water management plan, sediment
control, land use and zoning, planning for a water front gardening
seminar, as well as a second history of the lake seminar.
On the social side,
we held a Junk Trunque Auction fundraiser, produced the first WLA
Calendar (with original lake photography), held a presentation on
the History of the Lake at Point Breeze and are in the planning
stages for summer events. One of our fundraisers this Season is
the raffle of the new pontoon boat, a Sweetwater 18’ with four
stroke 25 hp Yamaha engine. (Godfrey boats and Action Marine have
been generous to our cause and we thank them). We will be selling
tickets for $100.00 each and no more than 300 will be sold (great
odds). Last year’s wave runner raffle was very successful and with
summer bound to arrive "sometime?" soon, what a great opportunity
to support the WLA and take a chance. The boat will be raffled off
during the June general meeting. Just for your information, the
Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering the Safe Boating Course at the
PAV beginning April 7th on Wednesday evening for adults and
students (12-16). Call 508-278-3808 to register. Safety is a great
concern of ours too. The next general meeting of the WLA is on
April 13th at Point Breeze at 7 pm. We hop to see you there. Don’t
forget the "Our Town, Our Future Symposium" at Bartlett H.S. on
April 3rd (call 949-8282 for more information). Our membership is
open to all and is a mere $20. per year. We do accept
contributions (tax deductible) that will be applied to defray
costs of our comprehensive lake management. Or if you have any
items of interest for the WLA members please email me at
