Webster Lake
Association News

July 2004
The Fourth of July was a
spectacular display of fireworks this year that was well enjoyed
by all who live and spent the holiday on the lake. Thanks Webster!
There was a very visible police force on the lake over the holiday
weekend also doing their job making our lake safer for all. Thanks
to the Webster Police as well. The weed treatment done on the lake
by ACT some three weeks ago seems to have been very successful in
eradicating invasive Milfoil in designated areas. This is the
beginning of an on-going project that will help keep our lake
pristine for the future. The entire process has been time
consuming for the members of the environmental committee who
deserve much appreciation and costly for our association but well
worth the effort that you can count on in the future as well. As
always, the WLA welcomes contributions to this cause. We would
like to see some of the businesses that are in Webster get
involved in this area of support as we all we benefit for years to
come. You may see teams of our Water Quality Testing out on the
lake soon compiling data on the health of the water. Teams were
trained to use GPS, sampling equipment of all types and will be
retrieving valuable information we can use.
Our second annual WLA birthday
party will be on July 25 from 12-6 at Memorial Beach on the
island. Food, fun, games, music and a great celebration are
planned so come and join us. Tickets are $8.50 for the meal and we
hope to see you there. If you would like to assist us in any way
please contact Judy Morrison. WLA is also in the process of
compiling antique postcards of the lake for our next calendar. We
are asking businesses to contribute in the form of ads, business
cards and coupons – please contact Judy for more info. Deadline to
be included in our calendar is August 15th with ads running $300
for a full page, $150 for a half page and $75 for a business card.
We hope that your business will want to part of this important
publication.
A little bit of history for all:
"In the Town of Webster, near the Conn. border, there is a very
pretty lake with a (short) name! Lake
Chargoggagoggmanchauggagoggchaubunagungamaugg. There are
forty-eight letters, fifteen g’s and nine a’s. And how did the
lake get its name? Years ago, Indians who used to live here,
fished here. The lake had three different divisions, the upper,
middle and lower lakes. The fishing was best in the middle lake
but two tribes used to dispute over that had the rights as they
lived in the upper and lower ponds. Finally, it was decided to get
together and form a treaty to settle the question. So they met and
agreed that those who lived at the upper end had the right to fish
in the upper lake, that those who lived at the lower end could
fish at the lower lake but that neither tribe could fish in the
middle lake which was fortunate for the fish in the middle. So
they named the lake after the terms of the treaty; "Chargoggagogg,
"you fish on your side," Manchaugagogg "I fish on my side," and
Chaubunagungamaugg," nobody fish in the middle." The imaginable
story of this alleged treaty has lead to the fanciful tale that is
still used today to describe "Neutral Waters." Happy fishing to
all!
Next General Meeting is August 10
at Point Breeze at 7pm. Hope to see you all there. Everyone is
welcome and membership is open to all for $20.00 |
