VISITORS GUIDE TO THE FOREIGN COUNTRY OF BOSTON

There's no school on School Street, no court on Court Street,
no dock on
Dock Square, and no water on Water Street. Back
Bay streets are in alphabetical "odda" --
Arlington, Berkeley,
Clarendon, Dartmouth, and so on.... So are South Boston
streets -- A, B, C, D, etc.. If the streets are named after
trees (e.g., Walnut, Chestnut, Elm), you're on Beacon Hill.
If they're named after poets -- you are in
Wellesley.
Massachusetts Avenue is Mass Ave. Commonwealth Avenue
is Comm Ave. South Boston is Southie. The South End is the
South End. Eastie! is
East Boston. The North End is East of the
former
West End. The West End and Scollay Square are Gone.
Jamaica Plain is JP, Savin Hill is Stabbin' Hill. Mattapan is
Murda-pan.

Frappes have ice cream; milkshakes don't. Soda is CLUB SODA.
Pop is Dad. Schrod is whatever they tell you it is. Usually fish.
It's not a water fountain -- it's a "bubblah" It's not a trash can;
it's a trash barrel. It's not a shopping cart; it's a shopping carriage.
It's not a purse; it's a pockabook. They're not franks; they're
haht dahgs. Police don't drive patrol units or black and whites.
They drive a "crooza." If you take the bus, your on the
"looza crooza." It's not a traffic circle, it's a rotary. "Going
to the islands" means
Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.

The Pat's = The Patriots The Sox = The Red Sox Do! n't pahk

Don't wear
Orange in Southie on Saint Patty's Day The colored

I-95 south. It's also I-93 north. You can't get there from
here. The underground train is not a subway. It's the "T"
and it doesn't run all night. (Fah Chrysakes, this ain't Noo
Yawk.)

Boston folks think it's their God-given right to cut off someone
in traffic. Using your turn-signal is a sign of weakness. Six
inches of snow is a "dusting." 63 degree ocean water
temperature is warm.
Rhode Island accents are annoying.
And how to properly pronounce some local communities:
> > Worcester = Woostah Gloucester = Glawstah Woburn
 = Wooban Revere = Re-vayuh Quincy = Quinzee Medford
= Meffa Danvers = Davvus Swampscott = Swarmskit
Billerica = Bill Rikka Leominster = Lemon Stah.

And of course, Webster (Web-stah) has the lake with
the long Indian name ...... ChaggoggagoggMunchoggaggoggChabunnagunnagugamogg
(or something like that) -- Means "You fish on your side, I
"ll fish on my side, and Nobody fish in the middle."
