2006 WEED CONTROL PROGRAM

The WLA in 2006 will continue to implement an invasive weed control Program for the identified "Hot Spots" as recommended by our consultants to prevent the spread of these species to other sections of the Lake. As you know, the amount of weed treatment is reliant upon the funding raised by the WLA throughout the year. This year, as part of the 2006 Sediment Correction Project funded by the State, a portion of this money will be used to treat Nipmuc Cove, the Memorial Beach Peninsula and an area located near Sucker Brook for invasive weed control. The treatments of these areas are important to the containment of these weeds.

To expand the control of invasive weeds, the WLA implemented a 2005 program to allow private individuals to treat their waterfronts under a Lake-wide Conservation Commission Permit. This Lake-wide permit saved the individual the necessity of applying for a permit before the Conservation Commission. In addition, the weed treatment company waives transportation fees for the equipment and gives a discount for the treatment. The treatment (raking or chemical) permitted is governed by the type of weed located in the area. The WLA makes the determination based on the survey of the weed population.

The effectiveness of the treatment is based on the density and type of weed population present. Multiple treatments over a period of time could be necessary.

Due to the popularity of last year’s program, the WLA will institute a similar program in 2006. We encourage you and your neighbors to take advantage of this program to improve your lakefront. If interested, please fill out the attached application and mail it to:
